High Plains Heritage Quilters

There is a very active group of quilters in this area called the High Plains Heritage Quilters.

They try to meet the first Saturday of each month, with some exceptions. They usually meet in Haxtun or Holyoke, but sometimes move their meetings to other locations in northeast Colorado or nearby Nebraska towns.

The typical meeting starts with a short business portion which is then followed by a lesson or project. Most of the lessons are about quilting, but sometimes they have a presentation on a complimentary subject. For example, the lesson at their last meeting was on painting tea cups onto fabric. The painted fabric could then be integrated into a quilt.

As part of the lesson, each of the ladies painted their own tea cup. I've visited the group during other quilting lessons and seen them all at their own sewing machines piecing away - it's quite a sight! They have a good time and I have to give them credit for being a very productive group!

Every year they host a quilt show at the Haxtun Corn Festival .

At that show they have a drawing for a quilt that the Quilters made as a group. Here's a sneak peek at this year's quilt:

They also have a silent auction for handmade pieces. The funds go to local charities like the Hospice of the Plains, Food Basket, etc.

Here is a special quilt they did for Haxtun's centennial celebration:

The High Plains Heritage Quilters love to have new quilters join their meetings! Just call Ronda at 970-774-7349 for the meeting dates and locations.
