Windbreaks Diversified
My friend Jerry Miller owns a tree planting business, Windbreaks Diversified. They plant windbreaks throughout the northeast Colorado area (check out this blog post to learn more about windbreaks) and many people in the Haxtun area will recognize his name, I'm sure .
I visited his crew on one of their jobs to get pictures of the tree planting process. Here's Jerry unloading trees. They start out small, but they grow fast!

Jerry drives slowly along the line where the trees will be planted. The disks on the tractor (not visible in the pictures) open a furrow in the ground. The men on the back of the tractor take turns dropping a tree into the furrow and then the wheels (visible in the picture above) close the furrow around the tree.
The trees have to be evenly spaced at a certain distance - how do you think they do that?

There's a chain dragging in the furrow behind the tractor with a ball set at the distance that the trees need to be placed. You can see in the picture of the men on the rig that one of them is watching that chain to see when the ball is even with the last tree planted - that's the moment he'll plant the next one. Good idea!
Another view of the guys from up in the cab of the tractor:

A little tree in it's new home:

A couple guys from NRCS showed up to observe the planting because they're cost-sharing on it. Daniel, the new Soil Conservationist in the Julesburg office, got some first-hand experience. That's Daniel on the right seat of the rig and Jerry's explaining the proper technique:
You can see in this picture the guys following the rig to check each tree and tap the soil around it.

Jerry has a quality operation. I would recommend his tree planting services to anyone:

While I visited and took pictures, Melise was content to pick at cornstalks. Don't blame me for the bow on her head - she did that herself!

They have a special rig on the back of a tractor for the planting process:

Here's the crew in action.

Great pictures. I winter in AZ and have been enjoying your blog. I am back in Haxtun busy taking pictures of houses and getting my real estate listings and advertising up and going. Lets share a coffee or tea at the Coffee Grind sometime when you are in Haxtun. Call me at 580-0415 when you have time - my treat. Sherrilyn
