First Clutch

Roy and I just returned from a fun-filled weekend vacation (more on that later this week) and we discovered a surprise - a pile of eggs in the corner of the chicken house!

Okay, you're probably wondering why eggs in a chicken house is a big deal . . . well, they aren't chicken eggs . . . They're guinea eggs!  Most are, anyhow. Some of the chickens saw the pile of eggs and decided to deposit a few of their own, but you can tell the difference pretty easily:

Chicken egg on the left and guinea egg on the right.

We're excited to have guinea eggs. Well, we're mostly excited that they're laying their eggs in the chicken house. We knew they'd been pretty frisky lately, so we guessed that mating was happening and eggs would be the result, but we were worried that the eggs would be hidden in bushes and other secret locations.

Now that we know where the eggs are we can start making plans for keets . . . very exciting! Any guinea experts out there who want to give us some words of advice are welcome to make comments!

In other news, we have our first bloom in the orchard on our apricot tree!

Soooo when I saw "clutch", I immediately thought you had bought a cute new purse. What does clutch have to do with eggs? And, are you gonna eat the guinea eggs like you do the chicken ones, or are you let them have babies?

LOL! A pile of eggs is called a "clutch". When I titled the post I was pretty sure that I was using the word right, but I looked it up just to be sure . . . hey, I'm new to this bird thing! Roy is planning to "candle" the eggs, which means he'll hold each egg in front of a bright light to see if the egg has been fertilized and will become a chick. If so, we want to let them hatch, we're just not sure how we're going to handle that whole process yet. We'll probably eat the unfertilized eggs.
