A Quick Tour of Lancaster County, PA

While I was in Pennsylvania, I couldn't help but take pictures  of the countryside. We were in Lancaster County, which is very much Amish country, plus it has lots of beautiful old houses and rolling hills. So I took pictures every chance I got and now I'm going to inundate you with them!

Tall grain silos and big barns can be seen on almost every farm in every direction you look.

This is the typical look of the farms in Lancaster. There's at least one multi-story house, if not several, and a large barn nearby with a couple of silos. Amish and non-amish farms can look alike. Roy taught me that I could distinguish Amish farms from others because they don't have electric lines running to them!

We were out touring on a Monday, which was obviously washday because almost every house had a string of laundry hanging out to dry.

The little kid in me got very excited about this covered bridge!

See that star? Stars and hex signs appear on many houses and barns as decoration and good luck.

Another picturesque farm!

Many structures are made out of stone - houses, silos, walls, etc. A very pretty sight.

This was taken in the little village of Intercourse (no, really, that's the name). About every ten minutes or so a horse-drawn buggy would go by. The buggies use the same roads as the cars do, but it seems to work out okay for everyone. Mostly, I believe, these are Amish in the buggies, but not all of them are. There are also conservative Mennonites who live in this area and share much of the Amish lifestyle.

Roy was on a mission to buy Lebanon bologna (pronounced balona, not baloney). It's a less salty, more tart kind of bologna. He finally found it at a grocery store in Intercourse. So here he is with his big hunk of meat in the middle of Intercourse!  Ha, ha . . .

I know it's tacky of me to make such jokes, but I just can't help it. Did you know that the towns down the road from Intercourse are Blue Ball and Mount Joy? I'm not making this stuff up! I'm sure they were named with very innocent intentions . . .
