Turn On Tilly
Roy bought a GPS unit for the car a while back. I took it once on a trip with Kathy (Roy's mom) and Roy's Grandma to Denver. We had quite a few stops to make that day throughout the Denver area, so we were concerned about having all the addresses correct so we wouldn't get lost. Before the trip, Kathy said to me, "You'll be okay because you'll have Sally talking to you." (She may not have said Sally, it could have been some other generic female name like that) I was confused.
"Sally?" I asked, "Is someone else coming with us?" Kathy chuckled at me and explained that she was referring to Roy's GPS unit.
The morning of our trip, we left at some terribly early hour when my brain wasn't fully functional. Kathy asked if I had brought Susie along to tell us where to go. Again I was baffled about who she was referring to, but eventually my brain clicked into gear and I confirmed that I had the GPS with me.
At this point, I guessed that Kathy wasn't completely convinced of the usefulness of "Susie" and that's why she was being such a tease. Kathy drives for a living, so she's a very capable and calm driver, even in the busy metro area that we don't visit more than once a month. If Kathy is going somewhere she's not familiar with then she does her homework by looking at maps. The rest of us don't have that kind of energy, so we trust Susie to lead the way - and sometimes she leads us astray . . . and then we don't know where we are . . . and we're not sure if we should trust Susie anymore . . . and we look to Kathy sheepishly hoping she'll get us back on track . . .
Anyhow, months after that experience Big Roy (Roy's dad) got his own GPS unit (I can just imagine Kathy rolling her eyes). Their first trip out with it, Kathy comes back griping about Jill.
Once again I was slow to catch on ,"Jill? Who's that?"
"She's the voice in the box that keeps saying 'recalculating' every mile!" says Kathy. Ah, right, the GPS.
This past weekend I got to experience Jill first-hand. Heading out to Denver again with Roy's parents, I sat in the back seat with a good view of Big Roy and Jill. Kathy was directly in front of me.

Kathy pointed out that Tilly wasn't talking.
"So it's Tilly today?" I said with a laugh - I was finally catching on to this game.
Big Roy said, "She's not talking because I turned off the sound . . . but just a second and I'll turn it on . . ."
Kathy gave a little sigh, "Yes, turn on Tilly!"
Immediately Tilly was running the show. She got Kathy to her meeting without any problems. But when Big Roy and I headed out to the next stop, she headed us off in the wrong direction. When we defied her, she spent the next few city blocks saying "recalculating" and insisting that we were going the wrong way. Finally we followed her route and it led us right back to where we had dropped off Kathy!
We corrected the destination and got underway. We made it safely to my destination. I waved Big Roy off to run his errands. At the end of the day when he came to pick me up, he declared that the GPS had driven him all over town to the wrong places. He announced that he had changed her name to JEZEBEL!
