Chinook Energy

Here's a business that I've been waiting for just the right time to feature. Chinook Energy (pronounced shinuk) is our local wind turbine dealer and installer. They sell "small wind", which means the turbines are the size to power houses, farms, or businesses (as opposed to the mega turbines at wind farms).
Here's a few examples of the turbines they sell.
This is a Jacobs 31-20. It is 120 feet tall and is rated to produce 20 kw of electricity per hour when the wind blows 26 mph. It is directly connected to the local electric grid. A net meter is installed to measure how much electricity is used by the nearby residence and how much electricity is created by the turbine.
This system is a good fit for a farm or business. Here's a closer picture of the blades.
And here's what it looks like from half a mile away (that's not a little house either). You can see this turbine for yourself by driving a few miles east of Holyoke on highway 6 and looking south - you won't miss it!
If you'd like to see the real-time energy production of this turbine check it here. For perspective when you're looking at the production data, our household uses 800-1000 kw-hr each month, but all households are different.
The Jacobs is great for people who have some clear land outside of town. It shouldn't be too close to any tall buildings or trees that may block wind. Also, most cities have height restrictions on turbines.
There are smaller turbines that usually fit within city restrictions.
This is a Mariah Windspire 1.2 kW. It is 30 feet tall and is rated to produce 1.2 kW per hour at 24 mph wind. This is a good turbine to supplement the electricity usage of a household. This particular turbine is also located along highway 6 just west of Haxtun.
If you haven't noticed, I have some detailed knowledge of the products this company sells. That's because the president of the company is none other than my husband, Roy. But I promise there is no bias when I say that he is the best person you could want to work with if you're purchasing a turbine. He is a dealer for many types of systems and knows their strengths and weaknesses (and he'll tell you all about it quite plainly). He knows the laws about installing and owning these systems in Colorado. He's not just there for the sale, he's in it until the turbine is completely installed and running. He won't let a customer walk into a deal blindly because he believes that his business can only survive if he has total satisfaction from everyone.
He loves to talk to everyone about renewable energy systems, so don't be shy about giving him a call!

Here's one more picture of that Jacobs being installed. Roy is actually on the tower close to the top. Can you see him? That's dedication!
The proper pronunciation of Chinook is shin-nook which is from some indian language which means "snow eater". It is a relatively strong down slope wind off the mountains which warms and melts the snow on the plains. I, too, am in the bottom picture - at the bottom of the crane doing absolutely nothing which I am very good at! I am proud of what Roy is doing.
