My Helper Got Distracted
Every day Melise and I go out to feed the cats, check for eggs, and get the mail. For a little while, I had a problem with Melise getting into chicken poop while I was checking eggs. I couldn't hold her the whole time because she's just too wiggly and I end up dropping eggs. So I would set her just outside the door of the chicken house. For a few days that worked, but then one day I turned around and she was in the chicken house with her hands covered in chicken poop (she doesn't have to look far to find it). Then I started setting her down about ten feet from the chicken house, hoping that a nearby plant or cat might catch her attention. Again, this only worked a few days before I turned around to find her in the chicken house covered in poop. That child moves quick! Finally, I discovered her knack for throwing scratch to the chickens. It was the perfect distraction! I set her and the bucket of scratch outside the door and she'd happily dig her hands into the scratch and "throw" some on the ground for the chickens.
Two days ago, I followed the same procedure, except I also threw some vegetable scraps out for the birds. I set Melise with the bucket of scratch and went inside to get eggs. When I came out this is what I found:
Melise was more interested in the vegie scraps than throwing scratch! That's okay, the chickens didn't seem to mind her absence. And do you notice who else is into the vegie scraps? I really do feed those cats every day! Oh well.
