Cabin Fever Breeds Mayhem

We have had snow on the ground here for over a week. We had a few days where the temps made it only a few degrees above zero before it fell again. Currently, the sun is out but the thermometer reads 11 F. Wow. On the news this morning they said the "arctic air" will pass by tomorrow and we'll have temperatures back up into the forties! It's a little insane how good that sounds!

Even though we can go outside, we really don't unless we HAVE to. Do you blame us? It's 11 F outside! So we've been getting a little stir crazy indoors. Melise gives a whole new meaning to cabin fever because the more time you give her to explore the house the more crazy life gets!

This morning we were doing our usual routine: I make breakfast while Melise chases the cat (the cat can hide if he wants to, but even he's bored to tears and enjoys the attention). As I was busy at the stove, Melise was playing right behind me. She started squealing with excitement, so I turned around to see . . .

That is my hot cocoa mix all over the floor. And that is Melise's "Am I in trouble?" face.

And for a moment she was in trouble. My instinct was to scoop her up and wash up the mess immediately. But then, I thought, the damage is already done. So I said, "Oh boy, Melise, show me what you're doing!"

Oh the joy to have the okay from mommy!

And back to work she went!

She paused momentarily because she needed more cocoa to complete her work of art.

But sadly, the tin was empty and mommy refused to find her more.

She recovered from the disappointment and went on to "paint" cocoa all over the kitchen floor and herself for a good half hour. Amazingly enough, she never tried to taste it!

I'm sorry I neglected to get a picture of the final result, but here's what I looked like after my little artist gave me a big hug:

White shirt is not so white anymore!

That's okay, the mess was worth the entertainment. I love motherhood!

Yummy! I bet she smelled good enough to eat when she finished painting! How fun! Next step: painting with pudding!

Pudding would probably be an improvement over cocoa, especially if it is contained in a high chair tray. It turns out that hot cocoa does not just sweep up as I had hoped. Instead, it leaves a greasy cocoa dust layer on the floor that I had to mop. Poor me! But the floor was overdue for a mop, so I guess it was fate giving me a hint!
