California Garden Gnome

This past week I have been in California visiting my parents. That is the reason the blog has been very text-heavy and light on photos. I thought about blogging about my adventures in sunny California, but that doesn't fit with the goals of my blog. I'm all about setting goals and sticking to them . . .

But now I have something so special that it just can't be avoided. While traversing the wilds of my parents' backyard, I spotted the very rare - almost never seen! - California Garden Gnome (not to be confused with their similar cousins, the Colorado Garden Gnomes)!

A very seclusive breed, the California Garden Gnome only comes out of hiding when they believe they are alone.

I watched from afar as the gnome made her way into the yard, obviously assuming there was no one around.

The gnome took her time surveying the lush vegetation of the yard.

I was very lucky to witness the high-pitch call of the gnome. They make it only when they are very pleased with their surroundings, you know.

In my excitement, I must have made a noise that startled her because she almost caught me watching! Luckily, she went back to her normal activities soon.

She was approached by a cat and her reaction clearly demonstrated that gnomes are comfortable with the local wildlife.

This gnome was particularly brave as she entered human territory.

She caught me watching her as she was trying to scale the steps that were not built for little gnome legs. Unfortunately, that made her turn tail and run.

When she noticed that I was still following her through the yard, she confronted me, but I couldn't understand her gnome jabbering.

Then she left and I have yet to see her return, but I will never forget my encounter with the California Garden Gnome!
