Baby Pictures

Yesterday I dressed Melise up and took her to town to take some pictures for her first birthday.   At the end of our "photo shoot" I had six good pictures.  For that, I pat myself on the back, but I really have two secrets to getting good pictures: (1) a good camera (Nikon D60) and (2) I take a lot of pictures in the hopes of getting just one.

A camera is something that everyone has to shop for on their own.  I had heard good things about Nikon cameras and mentioned it to my hubby.  It was rather much for our budget, but he found it on sale right before Christmas.  Because I get so much use out of it taking pictures of Melise, I will never regret spending the money!

As for catching a good picture, you can imagine that a baby is not the most cooperative model!  Thank goodness for digital cameras!  I have no guilt taking oodles of pictures in one sitting just to get that one perfect one.  Let me show you some examples . . .

Here's my favorite picture of Melise in Roy's Grandma's yard with an old tractor in the background.  Did my darling baby just sit and smile for mommy?  Oh no!

First she did this.

 And this.

And this before she sat still and smiled.

It took 35 shots to get the good one.

Here's another good picture.  I wanted this one SO bad because of the vibrant green lawn and the bright, cheery marigolds!

But Melise had her own ideas.  She found the marigolds fascinating.
She picked them . . . she played with them . . . she talked to them . . .
And she tried to eat them!

In fact, look back at the good picture and you'll see a half-eaten flower in her hand!  Sigh!

It took 45 shots and many marigolds to get the good picture.

Cute picture number 3!

First mistake, never put a baby near steps right after she's learned how to climb.
Luckily, she was deterred by Great-grandma at the top of the stairs.  She's nice, but Melise is still very shy.

This was immediately before the good picture.

And this is immediately after.  And that's why you just have to keep clicking!

I took 68 shots around the porch and the good one was in the first ten!

Beautiful, serious little girl, right?

Serious about the bench maybe.

She's highly concerned about this toy I really want her to play with.

Now she is bored with Mommy and wants to escape.

The good picture was taken when Melise was temporarily distracted by a woman walking by - only 17 shots this time!

What a pose!  Can't you just hear me saying "Now turn toward the back of the bench, Melise.  Put your hands like this.  Now turn your head back over your shoulder - perfect!"   Ha, ha, ha.

The real story is that Melise decided to stand up.
And knocked the bear off the bench.
And couldn't figure out how to get it.

Once again, the photo shoot was saved by the woman who walked by and got Melise to turn her head for the good picture.  Distraction is your friend!

Only 10 shots!

And this, dear readers, was a lucky shot.  A moment when she suddenly decided to smile at Mommy and I just happened to hit the button.  One shot - like a hole in one!

So, in one afternoon I took 233 shots (I left out a few here).  Again, I'm very happy that we live in the age of digital!  I won't even delete the bad ones because I love to see all the faces and movements of my little girl.  Oh, the power I wield!

So I hope you've enjoyed my demonstration of how to catch a good picture of a baby.  Beyond that advice, I don't have much else to offer, but if you want some quick lessons on taking great pictures check out this blog.

Until next time!

Great photos and I love seeing the process. She is getting to be a toddler isn't she? Melise is sure a beautiful little girl.
