Grasshopper Invasion

Since moving to rural Colorado, I have met many pests.  There are the mice in the house on which my house cat practices catch-and-release.  There are the rabbits that I used to think were kinda cute, but don't anymore.  There is the skunk that I once ran screaming from, but now I just wave.  There are the flies that I will spend afternoons hunting with a swatter.  There are the snakes that slither through our grass.  And then there are the grasshoppers.

This year is the worst I've seen grasshoppers.  There are places in our yard where a cloud of grasshoppers leads the way as you walk.  I've even become used to the constant sound of them jumping and landing all around me, like a strange rain shower.  To save our gardens, Roy has been trying to kill them off for some time with various treatments.  I felt a little more apathetic towards them - until recently.

Two weeks ago, we had visitors.  We set up our dining room to receive all the visitors for dinner and moved a certain umbrella tree out of the way.  It was a lovely umbrella tree, but rather large for our little house, so we set it outside.  Since it wasn't used to the wind and sun, it was set amidst our lilac bushes for its own protection.

Just today I remembered the poor plant.  My first thought was that it would be dead from lack of water.  I ran over to it, pulled it from the bushes, and was horrified to find that my lovely little umbrella tree had no leaves!  The blasted grasshoppers ate every single one!  Curses on them!  It is back in the house receiving all sorts of loving treatment and heartfelt apologies.  Hopefully it will grow some new leaves, hopefully.

Saint Francis, must you also love the grasshoppers?
