Haxtun Hospital

One of Haxtun's prides is its hospital. Keeping a hospital alive in a small town can be difficult, but the value to those living in the community is priceless. There are two full time family physicians, a nurse practitioner, an ultrasound technician, lab & x-ray technicians, and a full staff of nurses. I'm probably leaving out some important people, too. There are always nurses around through the night and a doctor on call, so you'll never get a message machine. The hospital has its own ambulance crew, too, so the wait is not long until help arrives.

![]() | This is a picture of Terri who is usually the first person you see when you walk in the main entrance. She wouldn't let me take her picture unless I let her hold the baby. |
| There is also a clinic alongside the hospital. Being an anxious
mother, I have the clinic number memorized. Trilla is the receptionist
at the clinic and she probably knows my voice by now. Trilla was too
shy for a photo, so Vernette - who is also a common sight at the front
desk - is standing in front of her. And that's my baby again. | ![]() |
There is also a nursing home called Heritage Living Center attached to the hospital and some senior living apartments (you can see them in the first picture in the background). They're really very nice. I didn't think to go into the nursing home wing and take pictures, but there's a nice open area where everyone usually sits during the day watching tv and reading. My favorite part is a little glassed-off bird habitat, so you can hear chirping and watch them swoop around.

The ambulance crew is made up of volunteers. There are multiple "crews" depending on the time of day and a schedule of course. Haxtun does have at least 2 ambulances maybe more. You usually only see the newer one. They also cover any accident within at least 15 miles of town. If the trauma is bad enough the hospital will Flight For Life you to one of three major trauma centers on the front range. Also I think that they have added a CT machine too, and they can do maternity too.
