Down To Business (About this Blog)

I took a long journey to get to where I am today. If you're interested, you can read about my history here. Now, I'm a stay-at-home-mom trying to make ends meet. I post to this blog every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (but please don't be mad if I miss one now and then!). This blog is my unofficial part-time job. It pays nothing, although I still keep my fingers crossed that the ads might earn me few dollars! I also write a column called "The Laughing Mom: Humorous Tales of Motherhood" for some local papers (see a sample here).

My goals for this blog:
  1. Introduce city folk (like me) to our rural, small town, farming way of life.
I've been constantly amazed since I moved here at how different it is from where I grew up.  There are obvious differences and not-so-obvious differences.  Being around farming is one really obvious difference for me and I want to share what I've been learning with others like me (and Roy will fill in where I'm ignorant).  Then there are differences that are so subtle.  Like the way rural people approach life is just a little different and its hard for me to put words to it . . . so maybe I'll save those for a later date and I'll start with the really blatant ones.

See posts on Farming here.
And posts on rural life in general here.
       2.   Showcase Haxtun
Okay, I've only lived here a few years, but I already think of the Haxtun community as my community.  I have this desire to show it off, so I'll do my best to visit places of interest, tour the businesses, and interview notable people in between my own stories.

See a list of local businesses here.
      3.   Be a local resource
As much as I like Haxtun, it was darn hard to get to know the town.  Everyone who has lived here a while seems to not notice that some businesses don't have signs or what they call "Velda's" is a restaurant named Bar-Lo that's owned by Velda (I just couldn't figure out where Velda's Cafe was!) or they can only give directions by "turn left at the old so-and-so place".  You would think such a little place would be easy to become a part of, but it was harder than Riverside, CA with its 300,000 people!  So if there is anyone out there who is thinking of visiting or moving to Haxtun, I'm here to help you out!

Please feel free to email me at susan@ourhaxtunlife.com and enjoy the blog!

My Roots are in Haxtun. It has always been hard to describe it to people because it's small..it's safe..it has so much potential..and I have seen it in various stages and it still draws me back! Thanks for showcasing it. It feels good to read all about a place dear to my heart and history.

Susan, Great JOB! I've never really lived in a small community, unless you can call CLIMAX, CO a small community. Roy just called to check up on me and told me about the BLOG so had to join in. LOVE IT! In 6th Grade (centuries ago) I stayed a week in Akron, CO and remember it fondly. This will be my way of keeping in contact with the HEART of Colorado! Blessings and LOVE, Ron (aka Rev. Ronald G.)
